The 6.0 Problem — And Why Most Shops Get It Wrong
The Ford 6.0 Powerstroke has a reputation. Oil cooler failures, EGR issues, head gasket problems — the list goes on. Most shops throw parts at it and call it a day. We don't work that way. Every 6.0 that comes through our doors gets a full diagnosis before a single bolt is turned. No guesswork. No shortcuts.
What We Found on Reading Heart's 6.0
Reading Heart's 6.0 is a textbook case — clogged oil cooler starving the EGR cooler, coolant intrusion beginning to creep in, and head studs living on borrowed time. Here's what the build plan includes:
- Bulletproof Oil Cooler — The factory unit is getting pulled. We're installing an upgraded heavy-duty oil cooler to eliminate the #1 killer of the 6.0.
- Bulletproof EGR Cooler — Upgraded to a high-flow unit that won't crack under pressure or heat cycles.
- ARP Head Studs — Factory TTY bolts are a ticking clock. Replacing them with ARP 625+ studs, torqued to spec, to keep those head gaskets sealed for the long haul.
- Full Head Gasket Replacement — New Mahle head gaskets going in while the top end is apart, with a thorough inspection of the block and head surfaces.
- EGR Delete & Coolant Filtration System — A coolant filtration kit to catch silicate dropout before it reaches the oil cooler.
- Full Flush & Refill — Cooling system will be flushed and refilled with the correct Ford Gold coolant, properly mixed and burped.
